Spirited Kentucky...

Spirited Kentucky …..

When people think about drinking spirits from Kentucky they usually think of whiskey or bourbon. Few of us consider Kentucky vineyards and wine.  Jean-Jacques Dufour was the pioneering fellow who first started grape production (in what is now Jessamine Co.) and in 1803 produced the first KY wine.  Kentucky has been growing grapes ever since.

The popularity of producing grapes has exploded in recent years.  Of course wine is not the only reason to grow grapes.  Kentuckians have been growing their own fruit for jams and jellies as well as for the table.   Grapes can be tricky in Kentucky especially in a wet growing season like this one.  We have received a lot of calls about disease running rampant in grape arbors.  The University of Kentucky has a recommended spray schedule for disease and insect problems along with information on pruning and basic care.  Proper growing techniques, disease resistant varieties and sanitation can make all the difference when it comes to a successful grape crop.

If you are considering grapes as an addition to your garden check out the links below.  Site selection and the best varieties to plant are your best strategies for success. We can be very spirited here in Kentucky especially when it comes to our gardens and the crops we are passionate about growing!
